Is this what reaching Nirvana looks like? This beautiful wood carving expresses such serenity and tranquility you can almost hear the Om as you look at it. This portrait is designed so that it can hang on your wall or rest on your table top. Each Buddha head is hand carved and is an unique piece so there will be slight variations in the contours of Buddha’s face and, consequently, the sound of the Om that you might hear.
Laine doesn’t want me to tell the story about how it was carved by a blind Balinese artist and it is through his carvings that he worships Buddha. She told me that I would be telling you a lie if I mentioned how this humble man would sway his body slightly as he softly hummed a song from the Bhagavad Gita, the words nearly disappearing as they leave his lips; they are not meant for our ears but for Buddha’s.
I won’t break my promise to her, so, you have to decide, is that Sanskrit that you hear as you look at this carving?
